May 2025
The mission of SVHC is to cultivate local solutions and collaborative actions that advance the health and well-being of the Cortland community.
May is Maternal Mental Health Month
May is a month all about mothers – it’s time to bring awareness to the prevalence of perinatal mental health disorders, like postpartum depression and anxiety, the #1 complication of pregnancy and childbirth. Maternal Health Month is an international effort to shed light on the 1 in 5 women who experience perinatal mental health disorders. When a mother struggles, the ripple effects impact the whole family.
You are not alone.
You are not to blame.
With help, you will be well.

From the Food Hub:
April's Food Giveaway
On April 10th, SVFR hosted a free food giveaway from our Food Rescue Hub. Over 200 cars pulled up to receive a bag of produce, as well as dairy products and frozen bags of either ravioli, perogies and/or chicken dumplings. During the 2-hour distribution we gave out over 4,000 pounds of food to our community! Over 2,000 pounds was New York State grown food purchased through our Nourish NY funding, and the other 2,000 was local produce donated through our food rescue program.
Thank you to Hollenbeck's Cider Mill and Main Street Farms for the produce donations and NYS Department of Ag & Markets’ Nourish NY Program for the funding to purchase food.
And lastly a big thank you to our volunteers for making this event possible! We can't do it without all the hours spent packing food bags, directing traffic and loading food into cars! As always, we appreciate all our volunteers do.
Coming Soon, Medicaid 1115 Waiver Services!
Seven Valleys Health Coalition will soon be screening and navigating Medicaid clients to a variety of resources to meet their needs. The Medicaid 1115 Waiver is intended to create a network of providers throughout the country, leaning heavily on Community Based Organizations (CBOs) which will be addressing clients’ Health Related Social Needs (HRSN), through a process that starts with a screening and ends with referral to services. The ultimate goal is to improve outcomes, lower hospital utilization rates, and enhance the overall health of clients by recognizing that one’s health cannot be viewed in isolation from all the various social factors that contribute to health, such as access to healthy food, transportation and housing. SVHC is one agency in Cortland County that is performing these screenings as well as nutrition and transportation HRSN services.
We are excited to offer these services in the coming weeks! Stay tuned for more information.

Avery McLoud Receives the Pride of Workmanship Award
SVHC Food Systems Program Manager, Avery McLoud, was awarded with the Pride of Workmanship Award from the Cortland Rotary Club. This award honors those "for exemplary service and displaying outstanding qualities in terms of attitude, work ethics, dedication, and commitment to the profession."
Taken from the award program, "Avery is very deserving of the Pride of Workmanship Award for the dedication and devotion she gives to her work with the Seven Valleys Food Rescue every day, making a difference to so many including people who are served by the Food Rescue mission, the providers thankful for the critical food, and the volunteers who are given the opportunity to do meaningful work."
We couldn't agree more. Congratulations, Avery!
SVHC Awarded Cortland Bright Ideas Grant
SVHC is honored to receive the 2025 Bright Ideas Grant from the Central New York Community Foundation. This $5,000 award will support the Seven Valleys Food Rescue program, allowing us to "rescue" edible food from grocery stores, bakeries, growers, producers, and more, and distribute the still-edible food to county pantries. We are so grateful for this award that will support us in our effort to reduce food insecurity in Cortland County.
