Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner is setting a precedent in New York State. On October 21 she raised the minimum wage to $15/hour for all city employees. The change will affect 69 employees effective immediately.
This move is aligned with other Democrats around the country to push the minimum wage to $15/hour, including N.Y. Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
The raises will cost the city approximately $200,000 a year. Mayor Minor said declining annual pension costs allow the city to afford the pay raise.
As a supporter of worker rights and fair wages, I say well done Syracuse!
