Table HE-12: Cortland County Waste Management

1998 1999 2000
Tonnage of municipal solid waste to landfill 20,141 21,317 24,923
Tonnage of sludge from sewer treatment plant
to landfill
2,515 2,413 2,844
Tonnage of saleable products recycled 3,000 3,000 3,000

As of January 2001, tires and major appliances were added to the list of regularly recycled products: plastic containers #1-#7, corrugated cardboard, clear, brown, green glass containers, newspaper, magazines, metal cans, office paper and used clothing items. This should reduce roadside abandonment and reduce breeding areas for insects. The county has constructed a new "cell" connected to the present landfill which should serve the county for the next ten years. Conceptually, there is space for two more cells, each to hold ten years worth of refuse or garbage.
