Description of Services:

United Way for Cortland County logoCreated in 1938, the United Way for Cortland County is a local, nonprofit organization that, with the help of hundreds of volunteers, strives to identify, address, and resolve human service needs in Cortland County. The agency exists to obtain charitable contributions from corporations, businesses, and individuals and to finance human services in Cortland County. United Way for Cortland County is governed by a board of directors consisting of 16 community residents.

United Way does not receive any state or government funding, but relies solely on the generosity of community residents. United Way for Cortland County provides funding to approximately 30 different human service programs at 12 local member agencies throughout the community.

The campaign, while it is the most visible activity, is only part of what United Way does. A professional staff of two supports the volunteer efforts by planning and following up on campaigns, producing educational information and materials, recruiting and training volunteers, conducting community research, and coordinating human services information in our community. They are also charged with organizing and conducting the SEFA (State Employee Federated Appeal) campaign for our county and implementing FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Assistance) funds that are directed to agencies in Cortland County addressing emergency food and shelter issues.
