Description of Services:
The Cortland County Probation Department is essentially a law enforcement agency. Operational since 1911, it is among the oldest county departments. The department provides intake and adjustment services to the Family Court in matters involving alleged Juvenile Delinquency and Persons In Need of Supervision (PINS). Information and referral assistance is also provided in child custody visitation, Family Offense, and other matters.
The department conducts investigations and prepares reports ordered by the Family Court in Juvenile Delinquency, PINS, Custody/Visitation, and (less commonly) in matters relating to Child Neglect/Abuse, Family Offense, and Adoption. Pre-Sentence Investigations are conducted upon orders of the criminal courts, as are investigations relating to offender applications for Certificates of Relief from Disabilities.
Community-based supervision of persons sentenced to terms of Probation is also provided by the department, as is the collection and disbursement of court-ordered restitution to crime victims.
