Cortland Regional Medical Center Maternity : Infant Hearing Screening
In the past, a baby may have been nine or ten months old before a hearing loss was noticed. Today, because of equipment such as the ALGO3 Newborn Hearing Screener, CRMC Maternity nurses can detect hearing loss within a day of birth. The ALGO3 uses an auditory brainstem response system, which means that the machine sends clicking sounds to the baby's ears and then monitors the brainstem response to the noises. Results are usually received within 10 minutes of testing. CRMC has been conducting the hearing screenings on all newborns, prior to their discharge from the hospital, since October 2001.
