Charles Street Residence - Alcoholism Halfway House

The Charles Street Residence, located at 29 Charles Street, Cortland, provides the recovering person a warm, homelike environment in which to practice principles of sober living. This is achieved through the self-help group process in which persons recovering from chemical dependency help one another to stay sober and live happy, productive lives. Residents also work with their staff advisors who help them utilize community resources to develop a recovery plan.

All residents are expected to attend AA and/or NA meetings. Strong emphasis is placed on work. Each person must be volunteering, looking for work, or engaged in classes for vocational training. Everyone must participate in the care of their home and share in housekeeping activities.

A prospective resident must be at least 18 years of age, alcoholic, sober, and willing and able to develop and follow a plan for recovery. The Charles Street Residence accepts referrals from a wide variety of sources, but we are used most often as a transition from in-patient treatment to independent living. Referral to our recovery apartment program may also be a part of this process.

Average stay at Charles Street is 4 to 6 months.

If a resident is unable to pay room and board, he or she will be helped in applying for public assistance, or a sliding scale fee rate is available.
