Literacy is a Family Experience

Literacy is a Family Experience (LIFE) helps low-income parents get their high school diploma or improve their math or reading skills so they can develop a trade at the BOCES Center for New Careers. A family life educator makes home visits with the family each week, and and an adult educator oversees the educational goals, either at home or at the Center.

LIFE also helps children under 16 with their reading, writing, or speaking skills, or gives them help with their homework. Parents learn skills to help them become better parents, including information about the kind of development that is appropriate for their child's age.

LIFE is available only to people in the Cortland City School District who are eligible for WIC or whose children are eligible for free lunches. The program is run by OCM BOCES Center for New Careers in partnership with Cornell Cooperative Extension. To apply call (607) 758-4155.
