Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP)
The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) is federally funded and may help with energy bills. Income limits apply. You are not eligible for HEAP if you live in government-subsidized housing and have no heat or utility bills. However, renters in unsubsidized dwellings may be eligible for a renters benefit if heat is included in the rent or a regular benefit if they pay for fuel directly.
Emergency HEAP benefits are available for people who have less than seven days fuel supply, have a utility disconnection notice for disconnection within seven days, need repairs to inoperable or unsafe heating equipment owned by the applicant, or need temporary shelter or relocation because of a home heating crisis situation detrimental to health or safety, including a need for emergency furnace repair or replacement up to $2500.
Senior citizens age 60 and older who wish to apply for HEAP may call the Area Agency on Aging Office at (607) 753-5060.
HEAP applications will be accepted beginning in November for benefits to be credited after January 1.
