Cortland County Area Agency on Aging
Legal Services for the Elderly
Services are provided under a sub-contract with a local attorney. This program provides legal advice and representation, including representation in court where necessary, to Cortland County residents age 60 and over. Tenant/landlord matters, social security, power of attorney, Medicaid spend-down, and consumer issues are some of the areas in which the attorney can assist. Most fee-generating cases cannot be served by this program. The attorney is available by appointment only, and most consultations are held at the Area Agency on Aging office. However, if a client is homebound, the attorney may make home visits.
Wills cannot be prepared through the legal services contract. The Area Agency maintains a list of attorneys who have agreed to prepare a will on a reduced fee basis. The charges for preparing the will are arranged between the client and the attorney.

Offered by appointment only. The legal services program is offered free of charge; however, clients are given the opportunity to contribute toward the cost of legal services. Contributions are used to expand the program.
