As a service agency, the YWCA offers a climate where women and family members of all ages may find a place to enrich their lives through experience in the fields of health, recreation, personal and social relationships, knowledge and skills, vocational aids, leadership training, public affairs, community services, and international relationships.
The Cortland YWCA is a multi-service human care organization attuned to individual, family, and community needs. Its five core programs are Aid to Victims of Violence, Early Childhood Educational Programs, Bridges for Kids, Health Promotion Services and Lifelong Learning/Concerns for Women. The Cortland YWCA has met many of the changing needs of the women and families of the Cortland area for 85 years. This multi-purpose organization provides services that are family oriented with concentration on the concerns and empowerment of women and their families.
Aid to Victims of Violence
A free, confidential service program for victims of violence in Cortland County. Help for the battered or sexually abused and for victims of all crimes. They provide emergency housing for women and children, phone counseling, client advocacy, crisis intervention, a support group, supportive counseling, and educational programs. [more information..]
Bridges for Kids
A program that provides children, ages 5 to 12, with positive adult role models. Each child is paired with a trained adult volunteer and together they participate in weekly activities. The child is provided with the opportunity to develop a positive self-image by establishing a trusting relationship. Monthly group activities are also sponsored by the program.
Early Childhood Educational Programs
This includes School Age Care and Recreation (at 7 sites), the Summer Care and Recreation Programs, the Here We Grow Child Care Center, the Learning Adventure Child Care Center, the YWCA Nursery & Day School and the Drop-In Child Care Program. They also offer art classes taught by artist Liz Sharp.
Health Promotional Services
Red Cross swim lessons for children and adults, water exercise, family swim, scuba diving, fitness and aerobics, yoga, weight training, circuit training, gymnastics for children, karate, evening and Saturday dance for children, outreach classes, gym and pool parties, music classes and theatre classes.
Lifelong Learning/Concerns for Women
A changing program of classes, workshops, and presentations is offered in three sessions each year. Many Lifelong Learning classes are free and open to the public. Also available is the Breast Cancer Support Group. Visit the web site for periodic updates.
