Description of Services

The Human Ecology Program at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Cortland County is dedicated to providing families of Cortland County with information to improve their everyday lives, through non-formal educational programs, newsletters, publications, videos, radio programs, and newspaper articles.

Information/programs are available in the following areas:

  • Financial Management: Family Budget Education, Financial Fitness for Young Adults, Mind Over Money Home Study, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, Making Ends Meet and Credit Issues Workshops
     
  • Consumer Issues: complaint resolution, consumer rights and responsiblities, and more
     
  • Housing: healthy homes, landlord-tenant issues, home-buying, and home maintenance, energy conservation
     
  • Foods and Nutrition: Eat Smart NY, Food Stamp Nutrition Education Program, as well as information and programs on issues such as food safety, food guide pyramid, eating for better health, food preservation, and more
     
  • Child and Family Development: Parenting Skills Workshop Series, Parent-Adolescent Communication, Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP)
     
  • Health and Safety: involved in community-wide partnerships including Central New York Healthy Indoor Air Coalition, Cortland County Bicycle Safety Coalition, Cortland County Diabetes Control Coalition, Cortland County Healthy Heart Coalition, NYS Child Passenger Safety Task Force
     
  • 4-H Youth Development Programs: club, afterschool, special interest, and 4-H Camp Owahta, for young people 5-19 years of age.

Cornell Cooperative Extension also funds the Cortland Fun and Family Resource Center located at 29 Main Street in Cortland, a fun place for families to come together.
