The Alternative High Schools provide intensive programs designed to significantly increase the probability that students who are at risk of dropping out of high school will complete a high school program. Students who voluntarily enter this program are demonstrating the desire to complete high school. These students frequently present a profile of poor academic performance, poor self esteem, a lack of identity with their high school, family difficulties, and poor problem solving skills. The program is designed to focus on the affective domain; coping skills and responsible decision making as well as the academic.
The program provides a course of study which develops a graduation sequence for a Regents diploma. Program offerings include independent study, electives, physical education, mini courses, group and individual projects, occupational education, and experience based career education in addition to a mandated core curriculum.
